Okonomimura is a gourmet place with around 25 restaurants serving the famed okonomiyaki.
The famous Hiroshima dish Okonomiyaki was known as issen yoshoku (“Western food for a dime”) in the pre-war period and was popular among the common people. Consisting of flour paste cooked with onions, dried shrimps, and condiment, it was a snack that could be eaten casually at confectionary shops around town. The dish got the recognition of a meal only after the war. In the busy streets of Shintenchi district, cheap food stalls and “uokamisan” eateries, which were run by women to earn some extra money, this dish was changed with the addition of more nutritious ingredients such as cabbage, eggs, seafood, buckwheat noodles, and wheat noodles. This is the present avatar of this famed dish.
Some of the eateries have English menus available, making it easier to order what you need.
The area is centrally located and is a 12-minute walk from the city center.
