Mode & Cost of Transports

There are three railway systems:

Japan Railway Company (JR Company), Streetcar, Astramline.

The visitor can decide which rail transport one wants to use and the fares will vary accordingly. In a streetcar, the minimum fare is 180 Yen. In the JR railway system, it is 410 Yen to Miyajimaguchi for Miyajima Island and Itsukushima Shrine from Hiroshima Station.

Astramline is the new electric transit system that runs from the centre of the city to the suburbs. Ticket fare is 480 Yen.

Buses are available and the minimum fare is 160 Yen from Hiroshima Station.

Taxis: For taxis look for illuminated boards, which means vacant. The fare depends on the car size, distance and time and the charges are between 540 Yen and 650 Yen.

  • Do not tip in restaurants. Tipping is generally frowned upon in Japan.
  • If you rent a car, beware that most road signs are in Japanese. 
  • Photos and videos are not allowed everywhere. 
  • If you are lost in the city, contact the police. 
  • We recommend you to exchange your currency at the airport. The local banks have a long procedure.
  • Bargaining is not acceptable in Hiroshima. 
  • If you opt for public transport, use a bus. Taxis are costly.
  • Some people are not comfortable talking about past attacks. Avoid it.

Night Life

When we talk about nightlife in Hiroshima, Nagarekawa is the place to go to. Called the ultimate party district, this place has it all - beer gardens, izakayas, late-night eateries, bars, nightclubs, pachinko parlors, hostess clubs and everything beyond. But if you are looking for a calmer night out, Hakushima is the place. You will be surprised to know that Hiroshima is famed for its world-class sake. Every October, the Saijo district hosts a huge sake festival. Drinking age is 20, and by 2:00 a.m. most bars close for the day. Before you leave Hiroshima, try their special dish Okonomiyaki. It is basically a crepe loaded with noodles, your choice meat, vegetables with a savory-sweet sauce.
