Known officially as Rokuon-ji, Kinkaku-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple that exemplifies the Kitayama culture. The three floors of the temple are built in different architectural styles, which are shinden, zen, and samurai. The first floor is built in the shinden style and hosts statues of the Sakya Buddha and Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. The second floor is a model of the Bukke style buildings used in Samurai residences, embodied by gold leaves with the Kanon Bodhisattva (Avalokiteshvara) are the center, surrounded by the four heavenly kings. The third floor is built in the form of a Chinese zen hall, encompassed by the golden phoenix at the tip. The gardens are exquisite and lead to Sekkatei tea house added to Kinkakuji during the Edo era. The exit leads to Fudo hall, which is a small hall of the temple housing Fudo Myoo, one of the five wisdom kings and protectors of Buddhism.
