About Sanjusangen-do Temple

Sanjusangen-do is a Buddhist temple in the Higashiyama district. It is known for 1001 statues of Kannon, the Goddess of Compassion. The facade is divided into 33 niches, hence the name Sanjusangen-do, as it is believed the Goddess of mercy could take 33 personifications. The main hall houses a large wooden statue 1000 armed Kannon. The 1000 arms signify the helpful nature of a human. The temple also houses sculptures of 28 celestial auxiliaries, artwork on ancient pillars that emphasise the importance of archery, and 500 statues lined up on opposites sides of the main hall.
