Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park is one of the most notable features of the city. The park is spread over 120,000 square meters. The museum commemorates the victims of the bomb attack of 1945 and the consequences of the nuclear bomb. It explains how nuclear wars can destroy humanity. Note that the personal details displayed are quite upsetting and not for the faint heart. There is a cenotaph honoring those who died in the attack. Below the cenotaph is a stone chest holding a list of over 220,000 names.
Every year on August 6, a ceremony is held at the park. A moment of silence is observed exactly at 8:15 am, the precise moment of the explosion.
From Hiroshima Station, take tram line 2 or 6 to the Genbaku-Domu Mae stop. The ride takes 15 minutes and costs 180 yen one way. Alternatively, the Peace Memorial Park is served by all three lines of the Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus (Meipuru-pu).
