The Asa Zoo is owned and operated by the city since it opened in 1971. The Zoo is situated on the side of a mountain so one will walk up and down a bit but it isn't hard. Located in the city's outskirts, the zoo is easily accessible from the city center by public transport. The Hiroshima City Asa Zoological Park is a fun and a good way to have a change if you are done with most of the important museums and monuments in the area. With an area of close to 124 acres, this zoo is home to 170 species of animals, including indigenous species such as lesser pandas and Japanese giant salamanders, along with African animals including lions, giraffes, and rhinos. A children's zoo is also on site. They have giant salamanders which are not easily found in zoos, and some other unusual animals along with traditional zoo type varieties. At feeding times the animal enclosures will draw a bigger crowd and it is even more fun if you have little ones.
Taxi: You can take a direct taxi which would cost somewhere around $20.
