The Qutub Complex is one of India’s most visited monuments in Delhi.
The main gateway, the Alai Darwaza, was built in the 14th century. It is one of the earliest examples of true arches and domes in India. It is also the entrance to the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, the first mosque built in Delhi and the oldest surviving example of Ghurids’ architecture in India.
Wander through the stone courtyard to the Qutb Minar, built centuries ago. Each ruler added to the complex, including the Iron Pillar. It is an oddity for sure! The almost 22-foot metal pillar weighs an astonishing 14,300 lbs. In the midst of all of the red sandstone, you’ll wonder why it was moved here. Though the Alai Minar was never finished, its raw undecorated stone is still a substantial 80-foot monument.
The fact that Qutub Minar was built almost 800 years ago and is still standing tall is an incredible example of the power of early Indo–Islamic architecture. The tallest minaret in the world made up of bricks is named Qutub Minar. It has a stunning architecture that keeps the heads of visitors raised high in awe. The minaret is a part of the Qutab complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mehrauli area of Delhi. In the Qutab Complex, the Qutub Minar is rightly said to be the most popular structure. The Qutub Minar is a 73-meter tall tapering tower of five stories. With a 14.3 meters diameter base, the tower reduces to 2.7 meters at the top of the peak. It contains a spiral staircase of 379 steps with a passage that is carved with beautiful pictures and art. The tower is covered with elaborate carvings and verses from the holy Quran. When in Delhi, missing out on Qutub Minar would be a mistake.
