About Laxminarayan Temple

Laxmi Narayan temple, also known as the Birla Mandir, is one of Delhi’s significant temples and famous visitor attractions. This temple is built by the business tycoon Sh. J.K. Birla, in 1939. This temple is located in the heart of the city near Connaught Place.
The Laxmi Narayan Temple, as its name suggests, is devoted to Laxmi, the goddess of success, and Narayan, the preserver. The father of nation Mahatma Gandhi inaugurated the synagogue and made sure that no one is denied entry based on caste. It was the earliest substantial Hindu temple constructed in Delhi. The Birla temple adorns its fountains and a spacious patio with Hindu and Nationalistic sculptures. You will also see other small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh and hanuman. The Shrine of Lord Buddha is also present inside the temple. It also houses Devi Durga, the goddess of Shakti and power, a Geeta hall called Geeta Bhawan, for discourses. The Laxmi Narayan temple attracts a considerable number of devotees at the festival of Janamashtami and Diwali.

It is the three-storied synagogues built in the northern style of temple construction. The entire temple has adorned with carvings portraying the scenes from the golden Yuga of the current cosmos cycle. The representations of the temple hare constructed of white marble transported from Jaipur. Kota stone is from Makarana, Agra. Kota and Jaiselmer were used to build the temple axioms. Artificial landscapes and fountains append to the virtue of the temple. Laxmi Narayan temple is a must-visit when in Delhi.

How to reach

Laxmi Narayan temple is centrally located, and Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, is the nearest airport at a distance of 18.7 kilometers. 

Taxi route: Hiring a taxi will take 17 minutes and will cost you 500 to 650 INR

Bus route: You can take bus no 780, get down at Jantar Mantar bus stop and walk to Laxmi Narayan temple. It will take 2 hours 45 minutes to reach 

Metro Route: Orange line metro takes you to Shivaji Stadium metro station, which is the nearest metro station. It costs 16 to 55 INR and takes 35 minutes

Uber: Uber is also available which will take 17 minutes and will cost around 484 INR

Drive: You can drive, and the approximate fuel charges would be 130 to 300 INR

  • The best time to visit this temple is during morning and evening aarti
  • Cameras, mobile phones are  not allowed inside the temple
  • Smoking is strictly prohibited
  • Dress appropriately to show respect towards the Hindu culture and sentiments
  • Eatables are not allowed inside the temple 
  • Lockers are available for camera, phones, and shoes
  • Do not litter the temple premises
  • Photography is allowed inside the temple premises, hence consider carrying your camera along
