The Belize Zoo was formed in 1983, as an effort to provide shelter for a collection of wild animals which had been used for filming a documentary about tropical forests. Shortly after the backyard "zoo" opened, it became popular among the Belizean visitors and slowly it developed into a dynamic wildlife education center. Today, the zoo covers almost 29 acres and is home to more than 150 animals that are native to Belize. Many of the animals were rescued, orphaned or donated from other zoos. The very green and the spacious enclosures resemble a forest more than a typical zoo. Among the zoo’s star residents are the five species of wild cats: jaguar, puma, margay, ocelot, and jaguarundi. Others include spider monkeys, scarlet macaws, manatees, boa constrictors, toucans and tree frogs. The zoo offers options for visitors to stay the night in the Belize Zoo Lodges, which has its own beautiful nature trails and bird watching deck.
