Actun Tunichil Muknal (Cave of the Stone Sepulchre), also called the ATM cave, is a popular destination for tourists, located just outside of San Ignacio. Experience an Indiana Jones-type adventure where you can wade through the cave’s fascinating tunnels and long passageways lined with stalactites and stalagmites. As the saying goes, beautiful things do not come easily; in order to reach the deepest part of the caves, you should hike through the forest and cross 3 rivers on foot to get to its deeper, darker chambers. It is all worth the hard work as you get to witness the “Crystal Maiden”: the actual skeleton of a young female, completely preserved, from thousands of years ago. Along the hike, there are many ancient sights that showcase the affluence of the Mayan culture. Actun Tunichil Mukna l(ATM cave) is protected by the government of Belize and is accessible only through guided tours.
Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) is a 45-minute drive from San Ignacio and 1hr 45 minutes from the city center. Most tours offer round-trip transportation from there. There is no public transportation that travels directly to the cave. You can hop a bus from Belmopan to the village of Teakettle, which is 7 miles (11 kilometers) from ATM.
