Lace up your walking shoes and get ready to explore the famous ruins of Altun Ha. This ancient Mayan multi-structure archaeological site covers 44 acres and was inhabited from B.C. 900 to about A.D. 1000 and covers about 8 square kilometers of Belizean countryside. Located about 50 kilometers north of Belize City, this place is accessible only by private transport. Altun Ha is divided into two sections, Plaza A and Plaza B, each with its own exclusive attractions. Plaza A houses the mysterious Temple of the Green Tomb and Plaza B is home to the Temple of Masonry Altar, the biggest structure of the site. It also houses the famous head of Kinich Ahau; jade stone carved into the head of the ancient Mayan Sun God, which is the national symbol of Belize.
Altun Ha is very difficult to reach without a car, as the area is not served by public transportation. The easiest way to get there is by joining a tour in Belize City. Visitors can also walk 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the village of Lucky Strike.
