Yanar Dag is a pit of fire, fuelled by the natural gas reservoir beneath it which blazes continuously on a hillside near Baku. Flames with the height of up to 3 meters in the air are often seen, which are said to be burning for hundreds of years, as it was recorded in the memoirs of Marco Polo and later, Alexandre Dumas. According to popular myth, when this place was under the rule of Russia, during WWII, Stalin had ordered to cover it with earth, to prevent German bombers from using it as a reference point during the night, but the attempts failed. The Yanar Dag flames burn without flinching, perpetually there is a steady flow of-of gas to the surface, unlike the mud volcanos, where there is seepage of mud or liquid besides the gas.
