Gobustan national park was established in 1966 when it received the status of a national historic landmark of Azerbaijan, with the goal to preserve the ancient carvings in this region, dating back to almost 20000 years ago. Set in a natural dry maze of hills, there are more than six thousand rock carvings depicting various scenes from a primitive society i.e. people, animals, sun, starts, rituals, dances, bullfights, camel carts, boats with oarsmen, warriors with lances, etc. The region played an important role in the history of the development of the human civilization, and these rock arts lay testament to it. There is a nice interactive museum which shows this fascinating part of cultural history.
