Baku Zoo is the oldest in Azerbaijan, and opened in 1928. After relocating in 1975, it opened in this location under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan. This 4.25-hectare zoo started with the basic goal of conservation and preserving bio-diversity. The symbol of the zoo is the pink flamingo, because, in 1990, the people of the city rescued a number of flamingoes and brought them in here. A team under head veterinarian Chingiz Sultanov nursed them back to health and as a result, there are about 30 of them in the zoo. It has a nice collection of exotic animals like Nile crocodiles, chinchillas, row deer, Egyptian dogs, and lynxes, as a result of the exchange programme with other international zoos.
The place is 6 km away from the city center. You can take bus no. 88 or bus no. 5 followed by 17, but you have to walk for a bit. If you take a cab, it takes around 30 minutes to reach the place.
