The Old City or Icheri Sheher in Azerbaijani language functions as the cultural and economic heart of the city with its fortified walls, double gates, mosque, palaces, souvenir shops, and restaurants. Once it comprised the whole city until the Russian rulers expanded Baku into the majestic metropolis it is today. The town has received a UNESCO World Heritage Site listing for the majestic architectural examples dating back to the sixth century, along with a cultural melting pot of Persian, Ottoman, Zoroastrian, Shirvani, Arabic and Russian presence. The walled city site has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic period.
The place is situated just beside the city center, and just 100 meters away. You can walk for 3-4 minutes to enter the roads and markets of the old city.
