The National Pantheon of the Heroes, located in the downtown of Asuncion, is a national monument and architectural marvel of Paraguay and a landmark. The building is associated with the pride of the nation. This is the reason that during an important event in the country, the people of Asuncion flock around this place with the national flag to celebrate. The mausoleum has been constructed in the memory of fallen soldiers, Generals, and Presidents. The building houses the Oratory of the Virgin, Our Lady Saint Mary of the Asuncion. It was designed by an Italian architect, Alejandro, and the construction was started in the year 1863. However, due to the War of Triple Alliance, the construction was stopped and was resumed after 70 years and was finished in the year 1936 after the Chaco War. The architecture of the mausoleum has a distinctly Italian style. "Fides et Patria" is inscribed in Latin at the entrance of the pantheon and it means "My faith and my country." Inside, there are statues of the heroes of independence. There are national flag-draped coffins belonging to the fallen heroes. There is a ceremonial guard changing activity held in the mausoleum every day for a couple of times. One can witness them. This beautiful monument is a must-see place in Asuncion.
