About Botanical Garden and Zoo of Asuncion

The park was established by a German Agriculturist, Karl Freibig and his wife Anna Gertz in 1914. From 1904, the couple used to visit Paraguay to collect plants and insects for the museums in Europe. Subsequently, they settled down in Paraguay and made it their home. The Botanical Garden was created on the estate of the erstwhile President Carlos Lopez. Presently, it occupies an area of 110 hectares. Anna Gertz designed the landscaping of the Botanical Garden. She was buried in the park after her death in the year 1920. There are more than 500 categories of plants besides natural flora of Paraguay,  in the botanical garden. Many trees are more than 150 years old. The couple, after creating the botanical garden, worked on creating space for the zoo. There are more than 60 types of animals, reptiles, and birds housed in the zoo. Since many local animals specific to South American countries are kept there, tourists from other continents would find it very interesting. A Natural History Museum is also located inside the Botanical Garden. Several display boards notifying the specifics of flora or fauna are missing in the park and if present, they are written in Spanish. This is definitely a handicap for the visitors. For those who are interested in enjoying the greenery, there are two paths available, one is 4.2 km long and the other is 2.7 km long. There is a distance marker at every 250 meters to keep the walker on the right track. There is a motor vehicular path also which allows the visitors to cover the park in a  motor vehicle.
