The House of Independence, as the name suggests, was the house where the patriotic Paraguayan used to hold secret meetings and make plans to get freedom from Spain. It was built in the year 1772 by a Spanish named Antonio Matinez Saenz and his wife of Paraguayan origin, Petrona Caballero de Bazan. Though Paraguay got independence in 1811, the government took over the house from the owners in 1943. The Paraguayan Government declared this house as a national historic monument in the year 1961. The museum is small but well maintained. It has historical furniture, paintings, portraits and decorative items of that time. Experiencing the period furniture, paintings, and decorative items in the bedroom, lounge, office room, dining room, and Oratory will take tourists down the memory lane of the 17th Century. There is a small courtyard with plants and a place to sit also. All the information boards are in Spanish. The house has historical importance and it is very close to the hearts of Paraguayans.
