It is the main Catholic church in Asunción. The original church was called La Encarnacion, built in the year 1539, using wood and clay. In February 1543, the church was gutted in a major fire which had also damaged the town. The present structure was built in the year 1845 during the regime of President Carlos Lopez. It is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, patroness of Asuncion city. The cathedral is a simple, colonial Spanish architecture. The facade is simple to look at. Usually, there are frescos, carvings or sculptures on the ceilings in most of the cathedrals. The flat ceiling of this church looks different but nice with green strips running across its length. It has a high altar on which the silver cladding has been done. This looks magnificent. The pulpit is beautiful with a large wind organ donated by Italy and kept at the back of the nave. Pope Francis had visited the Cathedral in July 2015 and had conducted a mass also. The Cathedral faces the Plaza de la Independencia with the Universidad Catolica next to it. The old structure and dark color of Universidad Catolica complement the Cathedral.
