Manzana de la Rivera is a unique place in the downtown of Asuncion. It has been carved by renovating and maintaining an old piece of a small city portion. This area was supposed to be demolished and a park was to be made in the year 1989 as it is in front of the President's Palace. However, a group of architecture students protested against this and thus an art center was created in the year 1991. The area consists of 9 old building structures housing a museum, a library, a place for performances, the Unesco office, exhibition rooms, a videotheque, and a cafe bar. The oldest of the houses is the Viola House and it talks about the history of Asuncion in the form of objects, maps, graphics, paints, and other elements. The Casa Clari houses the Cafe bar. The Clari-Mestre House is used for concerts, theater shows, dance shows. The Vertúa House has the Municipal Library with more than 20,000 books. Emasa and Castelvi Houses are meant for exhibitions. The Municipal videotheque is in Serra I and Serra II Houses. The Ballario houses the offices of the UNESCO in Paraguay. Various art shows and cultural activities of contemporary nature are organized on the campus and can be enjoyed by the tourists.
