Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts has a beautiful collection of modelings, portraits, and carvings made by the artist Zanabazar himself. The museum also houses other rare spiritual exhibits such as scroll thangka and Buddhist sculptures, representing the best displays of its kind in Mongolia. Most of the display captions are in English, accompanied by a comprehensive audio guide.
On display are some fine specimens of sculptor’s work, including five Dhyani, or Contemplation Buddhas and Tara in her twenty-one exhibitions. Also worth checking out are the fantastic tsam masks worn by monks during religious functions and the elaborate paintings. These paintings describe almost every aspect of nomadic life. As you enter the building, a place on the left presents classical art, including deer stones that date to the Bronze Age. There is also a shop selling souvenirs and modern art. The building itself carries some historical value. It was made in the year 1905, making it one of the traditional Manchu-era commercial constructions in the city. The museum was first a Chinese Bank, where the Soviet troops lived, and it later became as Ulaanbaatar’s first State Super Store. It has been an art museum since 1966.
The museum is around 13 km away from the city center.
