About Hustai National Park

This is a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve and is most popular for its population of Mongolian wild horses once thought extinct. The park boasts about its other wildlife such as Asiatic red deer, steppe gazelle, deer, boar, Pallas' cats, wolves, lynx, marmot and many species of birds. The best time to be here is at dusk and dawn, so to enjoy thoroughly we recommend you to stay at least a night here. You can spot the horse at a number of places, and local guides can guide your driver to the best spots. The information center at the entrance to the park provides an invaluable overview of the national park.

Tips

  • It is very difficult to have a small, non-powered car, especially in winter when the snow is cold, spring floods and summer rainy season.
  • It's dangerous to ride if you do not drive carefully through the sandy passageway.
  • It is not possible to get a large bus on the "Khustai" tourist camp to the protected area, in such case, you should order a car which can ride inside the park.
  • The longer trail is about 80 km long, which passes through an array of ancient historical monuments such as rectangular tombs, sepultures, deer stone, and Ungut monuments.
  • The shorter trail is about 36 km long, where you can see wildlife. Animals you can expect to see include Takhi, marmot, red deer, and raptors.
  • Overnight visitors can stay in traditional ger camps just outside the park.
  • Camping is not allowed inside the park.
  • Bring binoculars if you can, to better view the wildlife.
  • It’s best to rent a 4-wheel-drive vehicle with good clearance if not going as part of a tour.
  • Carry your bottled water.
  • Wear a pair of comfortable shoes.
