When we talk about dinosaur remains, Mongolia's Gobi desert is one of the world's prime places. Three of the most well-known dinosaur types have been found here: the big carnivore Velociraptor, famous from 'Jurassic Park,' the horned Protoceratops and the egg-laying and bird-like Oviraptor. They are all from the late Cretaceous period, the last stage of the dinosaur era.
Mongolia's main collection of dinosaur fossils can be found in a museum in Ulaanbaatar, which had first been built to serve as a Lenin Museum in the communist days. It consists of a central hall with two smaller rooms upstairs. Shortly after entering, one's eye is caught by the about 4m high and 12m long skeleton of a Tarbosaurus Bataar, a relative of North America's Tyrannosaurus Rex, which was found during a Russian expedition in 1946. Many items have been repatriated, after spending years abroad. Inside the museum is a small souvenir shop, where books are available for sale in English about Mongolia.
The museum is 4.7 km away from the center.
