This temple museum is situated in the center of downtown Ulaanbaatar. It was the hometown of Luvsan Haidav Choijin Lama where ‘Choijin’ is an honorary title given to some monks, the state prophet and brother of the Bogd Khan. Foundation of the monastery began in 1904 and was finished four years later. It was closed in 1938 and presumably would have been wrecked, had it not been saved in 1942 to use as a museum displaying the old ways of the past. This temple is no more an active place of worship. There are few temples within the area.
Maharaja Süm is the main temple stars figures of the historical Buddha, Choijin Lama and the teacher of the Bogd Khan, whose preserved remains are inside the statue. There are also some fine thangka paintings inside. The protector chapel behind the main hall contains the prophet's throne and a majestic statue of a mysterious sexual union. The Zuu Süm is devoted to Sakyamuni. The Yadam Süm comprises wooden and bronze figures of various gods created by the legendary Mongolian sculptor Zanabazar. The Amgalan Süm is holding a self-portrait of Zanabazar and a small stupa possibly taken to Ulaanbaatar by Zanabaz from Tibet.
The temple is just 3.2 km away from the city center.
