Situated 55 km northeast of Ulaanbaatar, this famous national park is characterized by a scenic mountainous landscape. It gives great possibilities for hiking, cliff climbing, swimming in super cold water, rafting and horse riding. For people with super hard-core extreme-sports, there's skiing and dog-sledding during the winters. The southern section takes care of the tourists, so it's hardly natural and overcrowded with the ger tents, but hikers and horse riders can simply get away from the crowd by hiking further north into the park.
The park is 104 km away from the city center.
Taxi: You could take a Taxi from Ulan Bator to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park for 120,000 MNT.
Be prepared for mosquitoes, especially in late summer.
Pay the admission fee at the park entrance.
Carry a smaller bag as it could be tiring.
Carry warm clothes as the weather is cold. Also, carry some mufflers, socks and other warm clothing.
If you get a chance, stay in a traditional ger. It really is a unique experience.
Most of the dishes prepared in the countryside will be made of mutton which means sheep or goat meat. But once you explain that you are vegetarian, then it is not that difficult. Restaurants and cafes in the countryside will just cook a vegetarian dish for you apart from the non-vegetarian dish.
Carry all important things like antibacterial wipes, medical kit, etc.
Carry your bottled water as it would be hard to find one here.
