About Ulaanbataar

If Mongolia’s Yin is its natural countryside, then Ulaanbaatar is Yang. The sprawling, modern city of vibrating commerce, excessive traffic, wicked nightlife, and art houses have a very interesting diversity. You can see wealthy businessmen brushing shoulders with hooligans and wanderers fresh off the plains. One minute you’re avoiding the trail of a Hummer H2 and the next minute you’re spellbound by chorusing Buddhist monks at Gandan Khiid. The city is the frozen capital in the world, but when the summer arrives, the city rushes into life after hibernating through a long winter. Ulaanbaatar is not an easy city to travel, but with a little endurance, travelers can take charge of all their needs, visit world-class galleries, watch old theatre, try the international cuisine and party till their knees get tired out. Certainly, exploring this ever-changing city could become one of your greatest travel accomplishments.

Public Transport System

Taxi and bus are the main modes of transport

Mode & Cost of Transports

Taxi: The prices are negotiable and you can even bargain for your trip. Taxis charge around T800 per kilometer, but for foreigners the drivers generally overcharge. After midnight charge goes up to T1,000 per kilometer.

In Ulaanbaatar, there are two types of taxis - official and unofficial. The official ones are recognized by the label on their exterior and inside may or may not have a meter. The unofficial taxis are locals giving rides to passengers. Don’t agree to a set daily price because it will always be more than the standard rate per kilometer.

Ensure the driver resets the odometer to zero before setting off.

To find a taxi, just stand by the side of the road and ask with your hand. It is advisable to go for an official taxi after dark.

Bus: Buses are on-time and have a fixed charge of T500 for each ride. Electric trolley-buses charge T300 but are slower and run on fewer routes.

Do's:

  • Make sure you book a good hotel. Hotel scams are very normal here.
  • Carry your own bottled water. Tap water is not safe to drink.
  • Book your hotel in advance. During the annual Nadaam festival in July, it's almost impossible to get any kind of accommodation.
  • Keep paper and pen handy. It is easier to write and explain to the people here.
  • Apologize if you hit someone or step on their feet accidentally because this is a rather considerable breach of local etiquette.

Don'ts:

  • Do not give money to child beggars as the pimps usually snatch it from them.
  • Do not expect the buses to be on time. They can be as late as a day!
  • Do not expect good navigation. Addresses are not very helpful for navigation. Instead, it's best to have directions for major landmarks using a lot of descriptions.
  • Do not trust the drivers. Be firm and strict.
  • Do not acknowledge or approach any Mongolian man under the influence of alcohol. Nearly all foreigners who go to bars/clubs at night report assault and general aggression.

Night Life

Ulaanbaatar is located at the center of Mongolia and is mostly known for being the heart of Mongolian history and culture, along with an active nightlife. With a city over a million people, Ulaanbaatar's nightlife is full of vibrancy. If you make any buddies, they’re going to call you out at some point. Mongol culture can seem a little reserved, but with a bottle of alcohol, it becomes friendly really fast. Unless you have a liver of iron, don’t try to match their intakes. Movie theaters are very famous in Ulaanbaatar, but there is only one multiscreen cinema theater. This movie theater plays English movies with Mongolian subtitles. It has many screens and runs like a western movie theater with new movies and a franchise stand.

Must See

  • Learn about the priceless history of this city - from Ghengis Khan to nomads or other things.
  • Live in a Ger - Mongolian gers, or yurts, are the traditional nomadic style of housing in the country.
  • Sleep in a Monastery - Buddhism is still the predominant religion in the country, and you will see monks walking around Ulaanbaatar and most of the other major cities.
  • Hire a local guide, do horse riding.
  • Drink Airag (or fermented mare’s milk), a drink that you won’t find in most parts of the world.
  • Bask in the Sunlight at Khovsgol Lake.
  • Experience a local festival here.

Experiences

  • Go skiing - the country is home to some impressive mountain ranges and untouched lines.
  • Have a night out with a group in a famous pub.
  • Go for day trips - Go hiking or ride a horse, or observe the Przewalski horses in Hustai National Park. Both make for an easy day trip.
  • Check out the countryside.
