As you enter the end of the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, a majestic white Migjid Janraisig Süm can be found which is the monastery’s main attraction. Facing the walls of the temple are hundreds of images of Ayush, the Buddha of Longevity, which gaze through the darkness to the magnificent Migjid Janraisig statue.
The original statue was approved by the eighth Bogd Khan in a belief that it would heal his eyesight, however, it was allegedly melted down to make bullets by the Russians. The new sculpture was built with contributions from Japan and Nepal. It is as high as 26m and made of copper with a sparkling gold coating. The hollow sculpture contains tonnes of medicinal herbs, some Sutras, two million bundles of mantras, and an entire ger with furniture. There are four colleges of Buddhist philosophy towards the east of the temple and Öndör Gegeen Zanabazar Buddhist University to the west of it. Foreigners cannot enter University.
The site is 3.9 km away from the city center.
