The Skopje Fortress, known as Kale in Turkish terminology, is a very old structure. The origin of the castle dates back to the 10th - 11th centuries. It has seen a lot of destruction and wars in the past. Travelers during the period of the Ottoman regime have mentioned in their traveling accounts about the glory and beauty of this fortress. The massive earthquake of 1963 had drastically destroyed this fort. Its excavation and rebuilding started in 2006. During the excavation, many items of interest, some as old as 3000 BC, were found. Byzantine Coins were found by archaeologists in 2010. The present shape and look of the fortress were given in 2011. The Fortress has been restored partially. Historic information about the glorious past of this heritage is not available at the site. The Fortress is close to the Old Bazaar. Since the exterior view of the fortress is very attractive, there is a lot of footfall here to capture the 360-degree view of the city.
