The present archaeological museum is the amalgamation of three museums namely ethnological, historical and archaeological. The oldest one amongst the three is the archaeological museum dating back to 1924 and was originally known as the People's Museum of Macedonia. Situated next to the river Vardar, the new magnificent building of the museum adds to the beauty of the city. The museum building has a Greek- Italian impression. There are three floors inside. The top floor is out of bounds for visitors since it is meant for the museum staff. The ground floor has a collection of coins belonging to various eras. The first and second floors contain items and exhibits from Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Periods. The second floor also displays weapons and helmets discovered in tombs during excavations. Though the Museum tried to exhibit the items reflecting the Macedonian history, however, many artifacts unearthed and belonging to Macedonia are in the possession of other countries like Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, etc. Therefore, in some places, history has been explained using wax figures, replicas, and illustrative paintings. The effort needs appreciation but many tourists have not liked this museum.
