Located in the heart of Skopje, Square is a social, cultural and political hub. The square has most of the important tourist spots around it. It encompasses areas on both sides of the river Vardar. There are three streets around the Square. Macedonia street and Dimitar Vlahov are pedestrian-only streets while the third street, Maksim Gorki, is lined up with Japanese cherry trees and vehicles are permitted. Since the cherry trees bloom during spring and only for a few days, during that time the area buzzes with various Asian cultural events. Since the area has all the famous tourist spots close to each other, walking tours are conducted by several local tourist agencies. The tourist walk starts from Old Railway Station and then passes through Mother Teresa Memorial House, Feudal Tower, Macedonia Square, the Stone Bridge, Holocaust Museum, Museum of Macedonian Independence, Old Theater, Archaeological Museum, Old Bazaar and finally, ends at the Kale Fortress. The Square is full of statues, with the "Warrior on a Horse" in the center. While many tourists view these statues with awe, some find them garish. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops around the Square. The area is well lit in the evening and also the buildings are illuminated. Hence, it looks different in the day and at night.
