About National Gallery of Macedonia

The National Art Gallery of Macedonia is located in the famous Old Bazaar of Skopje. The Daut Pasha Hammam was founded in 1948 in a building that once had a Hammam, the Turkish Bath and was built in the late 15th Century. A lot of conservation and restoration had to be done to modify the damaged bath to an exhibiting gallery. The latest restoration work was carried out in 1980-81. After the Gallery was set up, the exhibits were brought from the National Museums of Belgrade and Yugoslavia. The authorities have put in a lot of effort to procure masterpieces of Medieval Art i.e. icons, copies of the frescos, wood carvings, monastery models, paintings, etc. The Gallery has become the synonym for medieval art display. To encourage the contemporary artists and exhibitors, the Gallery acquired another space called Cifte Ammam in 2002. In 2005, another space named  Gallery Mala Stanica was added and it is a multi-media center. The Museum of Lazar Licenoski, the fourth addition, was opened in the honor of the Macedonian artist, Lazar Licenoski in his house, donated by his family.
