About House of Blackheads

House of the Blackheads, a venue for exhibitions, concerts, and other events, is a landmark of the Riga Old City and the Latvian capital’s most magnificent edifice. With a history of 700 hundred years, the House of Blackheads has been a beacon for the citizens of Riga through the ages. The building encompasses the unique historical heritage of the legendary Brotherhood of Blackheads as well as the history of Riga. For centuries, the House of Blackheads was the cultural epicenter of Riga, attracting the inhabitants of Riga and their guests during celebrations organized by the Blackheads and their successors. The magnificent Assembly Hall and the splendid Lubeck Hall, along with the Composers’ Gallery have detailed carved wooden frames and paintings of kings and rulers from the past. The monumental ceiling depicts the “Apotheosis of St. Maurice.”

  • You can see the items that once belonged to the Brotherhood of Blackheads: Snuffboxes, silverware, paintings, and pottery.
  • See the replica of the Statue of Roland, a symbol of the medieval Hanseatic cities, with the original located in St. Peter’s Church.
