About Whiskey Village (Ban Xang Hai)

When you visit Whiskey Village (Ban Xang Hai) you can actually enjoy the shot (or several) of Lao-Lao, the national rice whiskey as to how it is made right from the production to package and then finally decide which one is your final pick. Although it sounds a bit absurd the speciality of this place is having all sorts of snakes, insects and bugs which is used and fermented and mixed with the whiskey and sold in various shaped bottles. The other interesting part is you will also get to see The Lao Silk which is also woven live in front of you by the locals. so you can buy fabrics and other crafts here.

Tips

  • If you are a Beer Fan then, a trip to Whiskey Village is a must.
  • While Ban Xang Hai is most popular with younger travellers, it’s a traditional Lao village as well as a whiskey distillery. Families shouldn’t avoid a tour just because it stops at Whiskey Village.
  • You will find souvenir stalls at Whiskey Village also sell textiles.
  • Disembarking a boat at the village requires decent mobility and balance.
  • Just to add a few points here
  • Animal rights are not far as advanced in Laos, and its a little depressing menagerie of wildlife or much of it endangered, as here in Laos it gets added to bottles of Lao-Lao in an attempt to improve virility. Bear paws and tiger bones are sadly common, and it’s important to understand that by buying a product containing endangered species you are contributing to their extinction.
