About MOUNT PHOUSI

Mount Phousi is above 150 metres above the centre of town. The summit is well known for sunrise or sunset view over the Mekong River. Also, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the entire city and its temples, surrounding landscape to the mountains. The Ancient legend tells of a time spent of powerful Naga (part human, part serpent deity in Buddhist and Hindu belief) who used to call the mountain their home. You will see beautiful little temples and shrines dotted throughout the hill, their gilded rooftops visible above the trees. There's another temple Wat Chom Si and golden stupa sitting atop Mount Phousi which was constructed in 1804 by King Anourat, the 20m high golden stupa sits on a narrow terrace that has an incredible view over the whole of Luang Prabang. You will also find a small grotto that's home to large golden Buddha, where the locals usually come for offerings so don't be surprised to see monks around.

Tips

  • It's better to start as early as possible
  • The top of the mountain is accessible only via two stairways on either side of the hill with each over 300 stairs).
  • Mobility issues may force the unfortunates to skip this spot.
  • You will find tiny birds in cages which you can purchase to release at the summit for good luck (though we absolutely wouldn't advise this, as it supports a cycle of animal cruelty).
  • Please dress appropriately, and behave in a calm and respectful manner. And don't climb all over the temple the top for a better view or photo! keeping Phousi's sacred standing in mind.
  • Walk up the stairways to the top of Phousi Hill, you may come across vendors selling alcohol but its consumption is totally prohibited in temples,
