About PHA TAD KE BOTANICAL GARDENS

 PHA TAD KE BOTANICAL GARDENS are created on land which was once a royal hunting lodge and has a variety and science in abundance and excellent explanations of massive bamboo. It's in continuous development for about 20 years but it functional for the public for only 2 years. Everything in the garden is well organized and the plants labelled. You will find a ginger garden with plants in flower and several gardens with plants which are used for traditional and medicinal use. There's a wide range of limestone habitat walk which has ferns, orchids, cycads, figs etc. This also gives you a splendid view on the side of a hill over the Mekong. You can stroll from one viewpoint to another over the gardens through the Bamboo garden and get to the gigantic lily pond and cafe pavilion. Where you can take a break and have lunch and trust me it's very delicious with refreshing drinks.

  • Orchid talk (11 am and 3 pm every day in the Public Nursery) 
  • Bamboo handicraft workshop (10-11am and 2-3pm every day in the Baci Sala) where you get to learn about handicrafts 
  • Herbal tea tasting get the pleasure of tasting the authentic herbal tea tasting 

How to reach

To reach PHA TAD KE BOTANICAL GARDENS you have to take a boat, from Luang Prabang. The boat leaves every hour to the garden (from 9 am to 4 pm), and comes back to Luang Prabang every hour (from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm). 

Tips

  • Traditional Lao Bouquet Making/Baci where you can learn and see how the Lao people use flowers in many different ceremonies as it has its own symbolic meanings and rich heritage. You get to see how they create a small bouquet with banana leaves and local flowers.
  • You also get to learn how The Lao people rely on forest foods for a large part of their diet as you enjoy your walk you will learn about several fruits and herbs found at PTK. And who knows, you might even be lucky enough to have a taste!
  • Also, learn a lot about Gardening, Grow your tropical gardening skills with experts from PTK. This workshop intends to provide the basics of gardening in the tropics. You will have the opportunity to learn how to choose and combine plants, as well as a variety of gardening methods and techniques.
  • Since very early times, plants have helped humans in maintaining their health. Medicinal Plants have played a major part in adding to our health benefit. So you can join this workshop for an insight into the traditional healing systems of the different ethnic groups, especially the practices of the Hmong. It is truly amazing to learn about the many plants used in Laos to treat all kinds of illnesses and ailments.
  • Advisable to start early to avoid beat the heat 
  • The cafe at the garden has some great stuff which can enjoy with coffee and ginger tea respectively before getting the boat back across.
