Madaba Map, also known as the Madaba Mosaic Map, is a section of the beautiful mosaic floor of the Chuch of St. George, Church of the Virgin and the Apostles, an early Byzantine church in Madaba. It is a 6th-century depiction of Jerusalem, Byzantine, and Ummayad culture. The two-million-piece mosaic of colour shows intricate details of the world known to the map makers at the time, extending as far as the Nile Delta. It includes everything from mythology to everyday things like hunting, fishing, and farming.
Madaba was said to be a part of the Moab Kingdom during the biblical era. It was continuously inhabited since antiquity until an earthquake devastated the city in 746 AD. This led to partial abandonment up until 1890. The mosaics were discovered after the city was repopulated and the church was reconstructed.
