The Story of the Seven Sleepers, seven youth who fled into a cave to escape religious persecution and came out 300 years later, is important to Islam. It was one of the questions posed to the Prophet by the people of Mecca to test his authenticity. The cave in Surah Al Kahf of Amman is said to be the site where these youths fell asleep.
This story is read by Imams in this Surah every Friday, and Jordanians teach this story to their children when they reach the age of understanding. Surah Al Kahf teaches the Taqwa, the perseverance in both truths and in faith. The caves were discovered in 1963 as a result of some excavation work. Inside the main cave – also known as Ahl Al Kahf (Cave of the People) – are eight smaller tombs that are sealed. You can see a creepy collection of human bones through the hole in one of the tombs.
