Nishi Honga-Ji temple is known for its remarkable Buddhist architecture. It is filled with paintings made on a gold background. It also houses important statues which date back to the 6th century. Founder's hall has a statue of Shinran. The Daishonin building has many special purpose rooms, each filled with beautiful fresco on walls and ceilings, including paintings of flowers in white and gold Kaiho Yusetsu.
By bus: Take Kyoto City Bus #9, #28 or #75 bound for Nishigamo Via Nijo-Jo Castle (#9), Daikakuji Temple Via Arashiyama (#28), Eigamura (#75) and get off at Nishi Hongwanji-mae bus stop. About 1 min. walk from the bus stop. Busfare is around 230 Yen.
By Taxi: About 5 min. from JR Kyoto Station. Taxi fare is usually less than Yen 1,000.
By Walk: If the weather is nice, walking is the best way to get to the temple from JR Kyoto Station. It only takes about 15 mins. Just walk to the north on Horikawa Street and you will find the temple on your left right after Shichijo Street (7th Street).
