About Heian Shrine

Kyoto Heian Shrine is a building of cultural significance with a giant torii gate at the entrance. A spacious wide-open court, which is often used for entertainment and cultural events, leads to the garden of cherry blossom trees and other aesthetic flora. Look out for the weeping cherry blossom, which flowers a few days later than its neighbors.

The Shrine, uniquely built to harmonize the natural and the cultural environment through Buddhist architecture, is the site of the Jidai Matsuri, one of Kyoto's three famous festivals.
