About The Old Town

The Old Town is located on both sides of the Kura River and is dominated by Mount Mtatsminda, Narikala fortress, and the Kartlis Deda monument. It is at the foot of the imposing hill capped by the Narikala Fortress. In the  Old Town, there are officially designated monuments, churches and pastel-colored wooden houses with open, carved balconies overlooking into the maze cobbled streets. Since much of the city was destroyed by the devastating Persian invasion in 1795, the remaining houses mostly belong to the 19th Century. There was a subdivision of Old Tbilisi in the 19th Century. The Georgian, German, and Armenian quarters were on the left bank of the Kura River. Whereas, the Persian Quarter (Said-Abad) was on the right bank. During the year 2007 to 2013, the Old Tbilisi town was the administrative district. In 2010, the government of Tbilisi started a program called “New Life for Old Tbilisi” under which old and damaged houses and cobbled streets were to be renewed to make Old Tbilisi more attractive for tourists. Parts of the old Tbilisi have been renovated. Some streets have been modified to look like a Disney film set, though many of these cobbled streets are untouched giving the town a rustic and inviting look. In the Old Town is the “Abanotubani” district famous for the therapeutic sulfur baths. The bathhouses are located below ground level with beehive-like domes visible on the surface. These domes, in fact, are the trademark of Sulfur baths. Visiting a Sulfur bath and relaxing there is highly recommended. There are baths available that have separate sections for men and women. They also have private rooms. When tired, one can rest in a restaurant to enjoy the local cuisine, wine, and sweets. The vintage old town will charm tourists a lot.
