About Georgian National Museum

The museum was established by the Department of Russian Imperial Geographic Society in 1825. The museum has a tragic history of fire. Its name has also been changed many times. During the Bolsheviks period, everything was taken to Europe and could only be returned in 1945. On 30 December 2005, all the different 13 museums, namely

  • Soviet occupation Museum
  • Samtskhe-Javakheti History Museum
  • Tbilisi History Museum
  • Georgia Art Museum
  • Dmanisi Museum-Reserve of History and Archaeology
  • Open Air Museum of Ethnography
  • Institute of Paleobiology
  • Museum of History and Ethnography of Svaneti
  • National Painting gallery of Georgia and the Institute of Archaeology
  • Sighnaghi Museum
  • Vani Museum-Reserve of Archaeology

    have been combined to one.

The museum has three floors dedicated to different aspects. Collectively, the exhibits range from the Bronze Age (3500-1200 B.C.) to the 20th Century. Several exhibits of the Caucasian national culture are also seen. The first floor is for the ancient history of Georgia. There are vessels made of mainly gold and silver, ceramic items, and jewelry. The world famous golden cup adorned with gems and geometric pattern is an artistic marvel. Weapons and coins from the 5th and 6th centuries can be seen here. Also, clothes and carpets of various periods are on display. One can appreciate the fossils of hominid Homo Ergaste aging 1.8 million years. The Stone Age section is equally interesting. The second and third floors are dedicated to the Soviet Occupation. The exhibition hall has monitors for tourists to watch documentaries. The museum gives a good insight into the history and culture of Georgia. Overall this is a good place to learn about the history of Georgia!
