About Bridge of Peace

The bridge, designed by the Italian architect, Michele De Lucchi, is a bow-shaped pedestrian bridge reminding one of a marine animal. Made up of glass and steel, the bridge stretches 150 meters (490 ft) over the Kura / Mtkvari River to connect Old Tbilisi with the new district. The wavy steel and glass shade is fitted with a large number of LED lights that are lighted 90 minutes before sunset until 90 minutes after sunrise enlightening the Mtki River and the structures on the two banks. From the bridge, one can see Narikala Fortress, Metekhi Church from one side and the Presidental Office and Baratashvili Bridge on the other. At the opening of the bridge on 6 May 2010, the Georgian President, Mikheil Saakashvili announced that bridge was a symbol of Georgia’s way from the past to the better future. 30,000 LEDs and 240 sensors are installed within the structure of the Bridge of Peace. They have an interactive light display system used to display and convey, a message in Morse code rendering the periodic table every hour across the two parapets. The lighting has been directed by Philippe Martinaud.
