Svetitskhoveli church is the second largest church in Georgia, after the Holy Trinity Cathedral. It is situated at the confluence of rivers Aragvi and Mtkvari in Mtskheta. It is a masterpiece belonging to the early middle age. It is said that the robe that Lord Jesus wore during the crucifixion was brought to Mtskheta by a resident Jew called Elioz. Legend has it that his sister died as soon as she touched the robe. She was buried along with the robe somewhere in this area. The Cathedral is recognized by the UNESCO as a world heritage site. The site dates back to the 4th Century. It has survived many attacks from the Arabs, Persians, Taimur, and earthquakes too. The present structure was reshaped between the years 1010 - 1029. The architecture of the cathedral is based on the cross-dome style of church architecture. This helps in providing good acoustics inside the church. While the main cathedral is built of yellow sandy stone, the apse/ semicircular windows are surrounded by red stones. The interior walls were once full of medieval frescoes but many of them have not survived, however, a few of them have been restored. One of them is a 13th-Century depiction of the "Beast of the Apocalypse."
