Metekhi Church is a Georgian orthodox church that is situated on the left side of the river on Metekhi Cliff. It follows a tradition of maintaining a healthy balance between the temples and the natural landscape. It was made to look like a continuation of the growth of the cliff or an outward projection of the mountainside. The church takes an area of 20 x 16 meters. It was built by King DemetreTavdadebuli between 1278 and1289. It has been renovated many times over but is still as captivating as ever.
The exterior features of this church give it a unique Georgian touch. It was designed to reflect the Georgian architecture in the 11th and 12th century. The decorations of the church are not specific but this was an ancient architectural style used in the 13th century. The interior features of the church have however been destroyed over the years. One of the most iconic interior murals is the 10000 martyrs. This represents a sad tale where locals were executed after disobeying colonialists.
The Church has a dome, which is the same as a medieval structure. Recently, Metekhi stands out in the old town in Georgia. Also, witness the statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali here. Whenever you visit Tbilisi, you must visit the Metekhi church, which is one of the ancient spiritual centers in Georgia. It is also symbolic, as it stands as a reminder of the history of the city. One of the best things about visiting this church is its unique architecture along with its being a sacred shrine. Even though it dates back to the time of yore, it has maintained its architecture to become one of the best-preserved churches in the region. The church also offers you a unique and vantage view of the surrounding areas as it is at the top of the cliff and offers one a picturesque environment with breathtaking vistas.
