Being the oldest church of Georgia, it is largely revered by the people here. It was established somewhere in the 5th Century, however, it saw many destructions caused by the Persian and Turkish attack on Georgia. In the year 1870, a new dome was added to the old structure. While reconstruction was initiated between1958 and 1964, the present glory of the oldest church of Georgia was restored only after 1991 when Georgia became independent. During the Soviet regime, this basilica was converted into a Handicraft Museum. Architecturally, the basilica is built on three spans. Earlier when the church was built, the yellow volcanic tuff stone was used, however, during restoration in 1958-64, bricks were used extensively for reconstruction. Prayers have been offered in the church regularly due to which the sanctity of the place has been maintained and visitors are expected to observe silence inside the church.
