About Khan el-Khalili

The bazaar district is a popular attractions for tourists and Egyptians alike. Khan El-Khalili in Old Cairo was established in the 14th century. It is an important district for cultural and economic activities. In the market, you will find plenty of merchandise displayed in shops and alleys. Sparkling silverware, gold artifacts and antiques, stained glass lamps, incense, handmade accessories, and ancient Pharaoh souvenirs are on display. Some of the shops inside the market remain open for 24 hours and the rest close at midnight.

How to reach

Cairo’s Khan El Khalili Market is located in the heart of the city. By metro, reach Altaba Station. Walk for 20 minutes from the station to access the place. Alternately, one may use a taxi to get there quickly.

  • You will be tempted to buy things you do not need. Hence refrain.
  • Do not bargain if you are not interested in buying the item.
  • If you show interest in any item, be prepared for a lengthy negotiation.
  • Bargain with a smiling face.
  • Do not be arrogant or insult the vendors while bargaining.
  • Mass produced items may be of lower quality.
  • Handmade carpets are worth having a look.
  • You may be offered tea or a soft drink in larger shops, it doesn’t oblige you to buy anything.
  • Avoid the bazaar during weekends.
