The Quito Astronomical Observatory is a research institute under the National Polytechnic School. Astronomical Observatory of Quito is a historic building, the second oldest in South America which was founded in the year 1873. The major research field is astronomy and atmospheric physics. The observatory project was led by Father Juan Bautista Menten, a German astronomer, and member of the European teachers’ team. He had created the teaching group of the newly created National Polytechnic School of Ecuador, and from the start, the place was equipped with a huge cache of instruments like a universal telescope, sextant, prismatic circle, theodolite, magnetic needles, etc. Major instruments in this observatory are German. The instruments consist of both astronomy and weather predicting instruments. The most important instrument in this observatory is from the 19th Century. The Astronomical Observatory was recently renewed in 2009. If you are interested in astronomy then this is a great place to visit and explore more about astronomy and its instruments.
