Thien Hau is a Chinese-style temple dedicated to the sea goddess Mazu, situated in District 5 of the city, the Chinatown part. Its historical lore is related to Lin Moniang, a medieval girl, credited with saving one or some of her family members from any injury during a sea storm through her spiritual power. In Vietnam, she is sometimes known as the "Lady of the Sea." The religious ideas are deeply connected with Buddhism and Taoism as the main altars are dedicated to Thien Hau and Bodhisattwa Avalokitesvara. The temple was first erected in the eighteenth century and ever since it has undergone several expansions. The exterior and interior of the temple are full of intrinsic designs and porcelain artworks which include coal figures of demons, animals, Persian and European sailors, and traders. It is a great place to visit and learn about local religious faiths and culture.
