Gia Long Palace, officially known as the Ho Chi Minh City Museum is an important historical site and museum of Vietnam. Adjacent to the Independence Palace, this place was designed by French architect Alfred Foulhoux to house the Museum of Commercial Trade. Soon after this building became the home of the Governor of CochinChina. After the World War-II, this palace was handed over by the Japanese forces. It was the temporary residence of the prime minister and served as the supreme court. After the successful invasion of South Vietnam, the People's Committee housed the modern museum in this palace. It is an example of classical Baroque architecture with European style in flooring, staircase, and Oriental influenced roofs. The facade of the building is adorned with grotesques. There are other types of motifs like typical chickens referring to daytime and owls for the evening, etc. The perfect place to experience European style architecture and learn about Vietnamese history.
