About Shadows-on-the-Teche

Located in New Iberia, United States, Shadows-of-the-Teche is a historic house and garden that belongs to the sugarcane planters David weeks and his wife Mary Conrad Weeks. Built-in 1834, this house has now become a national historical landmark owned and operated by the National Trust of Historic Preservation, Washington DC. Before becoming a national heritage, this historic place was home to four generations of the Weeks family.

Shadows-of-the-Teche constitutes 85% of the original furniture that belonged to the Weeks family along with more than 17,000 documents, including letters, photographs, inventories, receipts, and invoices. Shadows not only carries the history of Weeks family but also a part of the history of New Iberia. These documents provide insight into what is happening in this pocket of the country during any and all of these times back then. Shadows-of-the-Teche is still the house similar to the antebellum period when Mary Conrad Weeks Moore and her family lived. While moving into the home, Mary Weeks wrote to her husband David weeks: “I never saw a more delightful airy house, my room particularly. I have all the children in it and open the doors and windows every night. The house is full of artifacts and displays that will take your near to those time of 1834 and after.

Surrounding the building is a 2 ½  acres garden/ ground full of live oaks, Spanish moss, magnolia trees, azaleas waft, and the grave of Weeks family giving a breathtaking feel to the entire property. Shadows-of-the-Teche is also home to various events like art & craft fair in the spring and fall, Plein Air painting competition during the spring, Merrymaking season in December, farm fest, and a lot more.

  • The tour starts with a 15 minutes short film in the visitor’s center/ gift shop about Weeks and the family
  • The guided tour begins 15 minutes past the hour
  • The last tour begins at 3:15 p.m., hence consider reaching before the time to get entry
  • Photography is prohibited inside the building
  • Consider buying artifacts of the historic home as well as books, art, and artifacts of the region from the gift shop/ visitors center
  • Do not touch or harm any of the display inside the house
  • Consider spending time in the garden outside the building
  • Visiting during events and fests is a great option to enjoy
  • Shadows-of-the-Teche is a kid’s friendly place (above 6 mainly), hence consider taking them along
